Burley's Short Game Tips

Short Game

A great short game can turn a bad ball striking day into a decent round. The short game is much easier to learn and manage than a full swing.

When teaching my students short game I make it very clear that they have the most advantage over the green by getting the ball rolling as quick as possible. Try some chips and pitches from around the green shooting at different distances, you want to hold an angle with the hands infront of the ball (Foreward Press). By making a putting stroke motion with the shoulders, you can return the hands back to the aiming point at impact. Move the ball all around in your stance to see how it affects the spin and trajectory of your shots.

When you use a pitching wedge or the putter around the green your chances of placing the ball in the hole go up 75% as to using a more lofted club. I can take 100 golfers with putter in hand placing them all 30 ft. from the hole having 75% of the balls in a 2 foot area around the cup, with  10% holing out. Only 15% of those same people would be able to fly the ball in the air in that same 2 foot circle, with only .05% of  a hole out.

The bunker is the best place to be if you have the right setup to the ball. I picked up a really great tip from Lee Trevino about bunker play many years ago.  When you are in a green side bunker imagen the letter "V" the right side of the V is your target line, the left side of the V is your feet line, and we will have the ball in the back of our stance. All we are looking at doing is cocking the club up quickly and bringing it back down to the ball on this steep angle.
